Friday 10th June – travel plus a little walking – sunny.
We were invited down to Surrey to visit the Grandson so for the first time
in over two years we leave Felixstowe and actually have a couple of nights
away in our little campervan. With a neighbour popping into feed our two
cats and van packed we set off around 11 with the first stop Tesco in
Ipswich to top up the diesel, £99 does not fill her up now:( Still we are
traveling light and I didn’t go over 55 on the whole trip, much more
relaxing and better for the fuel consumption! The journey went well with no
hold ups eating lunch on the move and we still had money for the Dartford
toll but it was still nice to get off the awful A 25 at Leatherhead and as
we are early, we stop by the River Mole at Dorking, a favourite spot of
ours at the foot of Box Hill:) We take our cuppa down to the river and over
the stepping stones to enjoy the view chatting to several nice people, one
lady was related to a Facebook friend from Felixstowe, small world! We then
walk to the small bridge and watch a dog having fun in the river before
continuing our journey to Sayers Croft, where my son lives and works in
Ewhurst. We are in perfect time to walk the short distance to pick the
Grandson Arlo up from school, he is first out and very excited to see us:)
He goes to a lovely old village school and we enjoy the walk back over the
park in warm sunshine. It’s then time for Arlo to have a belated birthday
cake from us which he really enjoys as it involves digging for bones etc in
crumble mix:) As they live at Sayers Croft an outdoor activity centre, we
head out for Arlo to make the most of some of the activities! First the new
low ropes course where you strap a 5 year old to a rope and he sets off
high above the ground through a serious of obstacles with a long zip wire
to finish, he loved it. He was on the zip wire ages as we whizz him back
and forth all giggling! Its then onto the new 11m climbing wall and he
shoots up within a couple of metres from the top like a mountain goat!
Home for a curry with Mag reading the bedtime story, top day:)
Saturday 11th June – walk ***** around the woods at Sayers Croft –
sunny.
Mag wakes early with a headache which sadly she has all day so decides to
have a walk, the builders arrive to carry on putting the shingles on
Robert’s roof when I get a knock on the door, its Arlo come over for
breakfast just as Mag returns. We have a great time eating our Weetabix and
strawberries having such a laugh, Hannah sets off for the day looking after
kids doing their Duke of Edinburgh and Robert is also on call with groups
in over the weekend including 40 dads with their daughters from private
school camping for the night and the car park soon fills up to overflowing!
We then go for a walk around the grounds of Sayers Croft which is set in
some lovely old woods and wild pasture fields, just stunning with pond
dipping, nature trails, stream etc with loads of wild flowers including
orchids, butterflies and dragon flies:) We reach the wild pond with some
top dragonflies and we have never seen so many newts popping to the
surface! We carried on to the wonderful iron age round house which we
helped thatch a few years ago! Rob let us in and we sat in there awhile
surrounded by Roman shields etc. Arlo then makes us a pretend mal at the
outdoor pizza oven before having ago on the boulder course, again in lovely
warm sunshine! After lunch with Rob called away for work Mag, Arlo and I
head over to the park with the new kite Mary bought him for his birthday
and with a good breeze blowing we had a fantastic time flying the rainbow
octopus high in the sky. We left Mag kite flying, she was having fun and I
took Arlo to the swings with his Dad joining us too:) with buzzards
overhead being seen off by the local crows! Back home Mag and Arlo pot up
loads of sunflowers before I go for another short stroll feeding loads of
orchids. Back home for delicious bangers and mash, one last walk to show
Mag the flowers and it is my turn to read Arlo his bedtime story with
Hannah not arriving home until 8! Absolutely knackered, looking after a 5
year old is exhausting we had to bed at 10, we are just dropping off when
we are woken by loads of fireworks! It’s the posh Dads with more money
than sense entertaining their daughters with a display!
Sunday 12th June – Sayers Croft fun and travel home – sunny.
A good second night in the van and Arlo joins us for breakfast in bed again
before heading over to Robs, Hannah shows Mag her garden before heading off
again. The local Facebook groups are full of people complaining about the
fireworks which had scared assorts of livestock! I irresponsible Dad just
let them off with no thought of the consequence without asking permission
which would have been denied! As we were heading for home after lunch, we
made the most of the morning, first we went to the dipping ponds where we
meet some of Arlos mates who also live on site, Elliot and Zander. They
catch assorts of pond life including a newt which Mag has on her hand plus
several mating damsel flies and I got some cool pics too! It was then onto
the highlight of the weekend, axe throwing where you throw six axes at a
wooden target, such a laugh, Mag and I got the hang of it in the end! Then
back for a sandwich and it was time to say our good byes, what a wonderful
time we had had, loved every minute, Arlo is such a star and they are very
lucky to live in such a great spot! We left at 2 ambling through the Surrey
countryside, I even stopped to take some pics of a village cricket match.
The journey went well until just before the Dartford tunnel where we were
stationary for 40 minutes but it was quite relaxing, even had a hurricane
fly over! We made it home around six with the cat pleased to see us! –
Fantastic weekend:)
